Rosacea appears to
have differing degrees of severity including various stages
patients may go through. Some rosacea patients experience more
agressive stages than others.
Mild Rosacea - Typically
seen as mild facial flushing or redness that lasts only a short
period of time.
Moderate Rosacea
- The mild facial flushing or redness now lasts a longer adnormal
amount of time - sometimes days or weeks. Many patients also
report breakouts of pimples, bumps & facial veins.
Sereve Rosacea -
A small portion of sufferers progress to the final stage of
rosacea which is characterized by intense bouts of facial flushing,
severe inflammation, swelling, facial pain, and debilitating
burning sensations. On top of the inflammation can emerge crops
of inflammatory papules and pustules. At this stage, some patients
may also develop rhinophyma (rino-fi-ma), a bulbous enlargement
of the nose.
Conditions
Associated with Rosacea
Facial Flushing & Redness
The facial flushing commonly associated with Rosacea is
the result of increased blood flow through dilated facial
blood vessels. With Rosacea sufferers, this flushing condition
comes & goes without reason. The most effective treatment
of facial flushing today is avoiding triggers - Spicy Foods,
Alcohol, Hot Drinks, Extreme Stress, all of which have been
known to bring on Facial Flushing.
RosaceaBumps,
Acne & Lesions
Small, red, solid bumps (called papules) and pus-filled
pimples (called pustules) may begin to appear on the skin
of people with Rosacea as the condition worsens. These bumps
& pimples are very similar to acne, but it is not the
same. In fact, common acne medications can make the condition
worse.
Facial & Spider Veins from Rosacea
As the Rosacea condition worsens, red lines that bare a
similar appearance to spider veins, begin to form. They
often appear as red or pupleish thread-like lines which
may be few and wispy or numerous and tangled. These lines
are known as telangiectasis are a result of blood vessels
in the face becoming enlarged or damaged.
Facial Burning, Stinging & Itching from Rosacea
A number of rosacea patients report ichy, crawling feelings
on their skin. The pain, burning, stinging and/or tingling
symptoms from Rosacea are due to the dry & sensitive
state the skin is in during rosacea.
Bumps on the Nose from Rosacea
Rhinophyma are bumps that form on the nose area & are
commonly scene in patients with Rosacea. At times the ears
may be involved as well. Men with rosacea are 12 times more
likely to have this problem than women. Rhinophyma may result
in a thickening of the outer layer of the skin & overgrowth
of the sebaceous skin glands. Rhinophyma appears only in
extreme rosacea conditions and should never get out of hand
with preventive and intermittent care.
Ocular Rosacea
Ocular rosacea is defined as an inflammatory eye condition
often associated with rosacea. It is reported that 50 to
60% of all rosacea sufferers also have ocular rosacea. The
most frequent symptoms of Ocular Rosacea are Dryor red eyes,
tearing and burning sensations, swollen eyelids and potential
vision loss from corneal damage.
