There's a new
laser being used to treat a variety of skin conditions and its been
featured on a number of news programs including CNN, The View, CBS
Morning Show & many others. The Fraxel laser has been approved
by the FDA to treat a variety of important cosmetic conditions.
It smoothes out fine lines and wrinkles, corrects skin discoloration,
and is effective in treating acne scars. Skin damaged from sun exposure
(age & liver spots), melasma and lentigos (freckles) on the
face, neck, chest or hands are all treatable with Fraxel.
The Fraxel
laser works differently that other laser resurfacing methods. The
procedure delivers the laser energy in thousands of tiny but deep
columns of treatment in the skin called microthermal zones. These
zones penetrate deeply into the dermis producing collagen remodeling
and reducing wrinkles. They also resurface the uppermost portion
of the skin, resulting in the formation of new epidermal cells with
reduction or complete elimination of uneven pigment. Further, the
remaining areas of untouched skin between these microthermal zones
allow the skin to heal much faster compared to conventional laser
skin resurfacing.
This "fractional"
treatment allows the skin to heal much faster than if the entire
area were treated at once, using the body's natural healing process
to create new, healthy tissue to replace skin imperfections. Thus
it creates less downtime than other laser skin resurfacing methods.
Most patients resume routine activities the next day.
The results
of Fraxel® laser treatments are immediate and progressive. The
laser stimulates the creation of new collagen under acne
scars, for example producing positive long-term changes.
Treatments take about an hour each, and are most effective when
repeated three to five times, spaced a few weeks apart. Topical
anesthetic cream will be used to enhance your comfort during the
procedure.
The U.S. Food
and Drug Administration (FDA) also cleared the Fraxel Laser for
the treatment & removal of melasma, also known as the mask of
pregnancy. The Fraxel Laser is also effective in treating &
removing crow's feet & dramatically improving wrinkles around
your eyes.

Fraxel is a new, unique technology that creates a smoother
skin texture and more even skin tone without the downtime
that is required with surgery. Fraxel utilizes a novel
method of skin rejuvenation called fractional photothermolysis
(FP) that rejuvenates skin by crating microthermal injury
zones (MTZ) in a computer controlled, geometic pattern
leaving normal skin surrounding each wound to renew and
repair the laser impacted skin. By treating small areas
of the skin at each treatment session, patients may return
to normal activities with minimal side effects and still
achieve the results attained with an ablative procedure.
Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery Center of Charlotte is
the first provider of Fraxel in the Carolinas.

The Sciton Profractional Laser is a fractional ablative
laser that represents the best of both worlds for skin
resurfacing: it combines the proven effectiveness of an
ablative approach with better patient comfort level and
convenience of a non-ablative approach. The laser targets
only a fraction of the skin surface (hence the name).
The Profractional Laser can be used on the face, neck,
chest, arms and hands a much wider scope than traditional
ablative technologies. The Profractional laser can treat
acne scars, fine lines & wrinkles, age spots &
melasma.
